CAO Internship Program
Gain hands-on experience supporting the U.S. House of Representatives.
Overview
First piloted in Summer 2022, the CAO Internship Program provides a paid, structured opportunity for students and recent graduates to contribute directly to the business operations of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Interns gain hands-on experience aligned with their academic and professional interests, while building professional skills and exploring potential career paths within the House.
Program Highlights
Interns participate in a variety of professional development and engagement opportunities, including:
- Professional headshots
- U.S. Capitol Dome tour
- House Floor tour
- House Recording Studio tour
- Resume workshops
- Panel discussions with CAO leadership
- Monthly cohort activities
- Capstone project
Interested in Applying?
Candidates must have a high school diploma and be enrolled in, or have completed, a higher education program. Strong communication, research, and interpersonal skills are essential, along with a demonstrated commitment to public service.
The CAO hosts interns in Washington, D.C., during the spring, summer, and fall semesters.

We are excited to have you join the team.
First Day Essentials
To help you prepare for your first day:
- Bring a government-issued photo ID to receive your House ID.
- Plan to arrive on time and follow any reporting instructions provided in your onboarding communications.
- You do not need to bring a laptop — you will be issued a CAO device for the duration of your internship.
What to Wear
Business professional or business casual attire is appropriate for your first day, unless otherwise directed.
What to Expect
On your first day, you will:
- Complete onboarding and orientation activities.
- Meet members of your team.
- Connect with your intern cohort.
Your Experience
Throughout your internship, you can expect to:
- Work on meaningful, real-world assignments.
- Participate in professional development opportunities.
