Glossary of Terms
Biodegradable
A material that is capable of decaying in the environment through the action of living organisms.
- Similar to the term compostable.
- The utensils offered in the House Cafeterias are biodegradable.
Commingle
To combine.
- Glass bottles, plastic bottles, aluminum cans and steel cans all go into the "Bottles & Cans" bin.
Compost
A mixture of various decaying organic substances, such as food waste or dead leaves that is used for fertilizing soil.
Compostable
An item that is capable of decaying in the environment through the action of living organisms.
Landfill
An area of land where solid waste is deposited.
Pulper
The machine that crushes, shreds and squeezes the liquid out of compostable materials like food, cups, plates, napkins, utensils and carryout containers provided in the House eateries. The House has one of the machines.
Recycle
To use again in the original form or with minimal alteration.
