As a Senior Office Coordinator in the CAO/Architect of the Capitol Joint Service Center Nick Garner handles more than 2,500 service requests every year.
He works with the AOC to renovate Members' offices. That can include swapping out furniture or computer equipment or even getting new carpet installed, which is now eco-friendly. Often the AOC brings in a designer who may request new drapes, for example. Its Garner’s job, he explains, to work with the CAO’s upholstery shop to get the drapes made.
Sometimes his requests even verge on the strange side. “One Member wanted a popcorn machine for his District Office,” he said with a grin. “He asked House Administration and they said it was ok, so we got it for them.”
That commitment to getting it done is one of the reasons Garner has been awarded the Darrell Norman Excellence Award, his boss, Office Coordinator Supervisor, Scott Hood said.
“Nick regularly goes above and beyond the expectations of his customers to meet the offices’ needs and to provide a quick and complete solution,” Hood said.
Garner said he enjoys coming up with solutions, but more than that, he enjoys getting to know people he works with, “You do get to meet different people from all over the U.S.,” he said.
