CAO Dan Beard's Remarks

Thank you. Let me begin by thanking you Darnell, and the other members of the awards committee for all of your hard work to put together these awards.

I am excited to have the opportunity again this year to welcome our ACE Award honorees, their families, friends and co-workers. This is your celebration. We are all here to celebrate your accomplishments and contributions to the CAO organization, and to the House community.

This is also a time for us to stop, reflect, and congratulate the entire organization for a terrific year of accomplishment. We’ve made this institution a little greener. We’ve improved our customer service. We’ve helped our customers – the Members of the House of Representatives and their staff – to be successful in each of their individual endeavors.

Over the past year, the CAO organization has continued its tradition of innovation, accomplishments and premier customer service in a sustainable workplace:

  • We all have helped to make the Green the Capitol Initiative a success.
  • We’ve launched an innovative program to hire Wounded Warriors.
  • Benefits for House employees are being improved.
  • We all worked hard to make sure the House’s transition to Restaurant Associates was smooth and seamless.
  • We’re continuing to develop and plan for the launch of Atlas, our new finance and administration system.
  • Our Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery team has successfully exercised a number of our House emergency preparedness and response capabilities.
  • We successfully migrated over 20,000 House e-mail boxes to Exchange 2003 and completed a Data Network Upgrade for District Offices.
  • We’ve improved the work-life balance for House employees.
  • We’ve worked with other House Officers and the Inspector General, to enhance leave policies, including the expansion of the paid leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act.
  • We’ve announced the launch of a bike sharing program that will make us the envy of other Federal agencies.
  • Washingtonian Magazine has named us one of Washington’s “50 Great Places to Work.”
  • According to the Office of Personnel Management, we are setting the standards for federal agencies in three service areas: Customer Orientation, Supervision and Innovation.

I am sure that you’ll agree with me – this list of accomplishments is impressive. However, it is only a partial list of the accomplishments of the terrific people who work for the CAO. And we’re here today to honor some of the very special work undertaken by our employees.

The ACE awards reflect an acknowledgement of our recipients’ hard work and creative energy. I want to thank each and every one of you for your service to this organization and the House. Whether you work with our customers, support internal operations, or insure our technical infrastructure and processes are operational and secure, your work has been special and all thank you for your contributions.

At this time I’d like Helene Flanagan and Dan Doody, our Deputy CAOs, to formally acknowledge this year’s class of CAO ACE Award nominees.
